About Us

The Virgin Islands Department of Education’s Office of Public Relations and Communications exists to heighten the public’s awareness of the Department’s mission to ensure that all students are prepared for college or the career of their choice upon graduation from high school.

In support of the mission, the Public Relations Office provides publicity for events, activities and the many successes of the Department’s schools, students, teachers, employees and leadership through internal and external communication.

The Office of Public Relations and Communication, through an integrated marketing communications approach services the marketing, branding, public, and media relations, advertising and graphic design needs of the Department, districts, and schools.

The Public Relations Office reports directly to the Commissioner of Education.

 

Virgin Islands Department of Education Congratulates the Brillant Participants of the District Spelling Bee Competitions held on Thursday, February 15, 2024

The Virgin Islands Department of Education (VIDE) proudly congratulates the remarkable students who participated in the District Spelling Bee competitions held on St. Croix and St. Thomas on Thursday, February 15, 2024. A total of 24 students showcased their exceptional spelling prowess and intellectual acumen as they took to the stage for rounds of competitive spelling. The exciting event brought together students from across both districts, each demonstrating remarkable dedication and determination.

Evan Fahie of Lockhart K-8 School clinched the title of winner for the St. Thomas-St. John District, while Rayan Felix of Free Will Baptist Christian School emerged victorious in the St. Croix District. Both winners are set to advance to the Territorial Competition scheduled for March 19, 2024, on St. Croix, where they will be joined by other district finalists, completing a pool of 12 students competing for the prestigious title of USVI Territorial Champion.

The St. Croix District Finalists include Chasidy Pickering from Pearl B. Larsen, Joseph Greaux from Eulalie Rivera, Jasem Rahhal from Good Hope Country Day School, J’adora Burke from Ricardo Richards, and Layla Jacobs from St. Patrick's Catholic School.

Meanwhile, the St. Thomas-St. John District Finalists consist of Kaiden Lettsome-Dowe from Antilles, Eli Blash from Moravian, Amera Paul from Calvary Christian, Kashyma Paul, Yvonne Bowsky, and Kwalane Flemming, from the Ulla Muller School.

“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the students who participated in this esteemed competition. Your passion for learning and your dedication to mastering the intricacies of language are truly commendable. Each participant should be immensely proud of their accomplishments, as they have undoubtedly left a lasting impression on all those who witnessed their extraordinary abilities,” said Commissioner Wells-Hedrington.

The VIDE expresses gratitude to all schools, teachers, coaches, parents, and guardians who have supported these students. Your unwavering encouragement and guidance have undoubtedly played a significant role in their success. VIRGIN ISLANDS DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION ANNOUNCES ST. THOMAS-ST. JOHN CHAPTER MATHCOUNTS COMPETITION

The Virgin Islands Department of Education is pleased to announce the St. Thomas-St. John Chapter MATHCOUNTS Competition, scheduled for Thursday, February 22, 2024, at 8:30 am. This exciting event will take place at the 13D Innovation and Research Center on the Orville Kean Campus of the University of the Virgin Islands.

Structured to challenge students' abilities, the MATHCOUNTS Competition comprises a written segment, where participants tackle complex, multi-step problems both with and without calculators, and a countdown round, a fast-paced, one-on-one oral contest among top scorers from the written portion.

The media and the entire community are invited to attend this dynamic competition, which will showcase 42 students from public, private, and parochial schools. This year's participating schools include Lockhart K-8 School, Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School, All Saints Cathedral School, and Antilles School. The top 10 students from this competition will advance to the state competition, scheduled for March 21, 2024, on St. Croix.

Since its establishment in 1983 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and CNA Insurance, MATHCOUNTS has engaged over six million students. The program's mission is to provide stimulating math programs for middle schoolers of all abilities, fostering confidence and positive attitudes towards problem-solving. Targeting grades 6-8, MATHCOUNTS recognizes this pivotal stage where a passion for math must be nurtured.

The St. Thomas – St. John Chapter MATHCOUNTS program is proudly sponsored and coordinated by the Rotary Club of St. Thomas II and the Virgin Islands Department of Education. ST. CROIX DISTRICT ANNOUNCES RESUMPTION OF IN-PERSON LEARNING AT PEARL B. LARSEN PREK-8 SCHOOL EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY 14, 2024

The St. Croix District of the Virgin Islands Department of Education (VIDE) is pleased to announce that in-person learning will resume at the Pearl B. Larsen PreK-8 School effective Wednesday, February 14, 2024. Following the activation of deep cleaning protocols due to an electrical fire in the administrative office, the school temporarily transitioned to virtual learning. Now, after completing necessary maintenance and cleaning measures, the school site is fully prepared to welcome back students and faculty and resume normal operations.
