About Us

The Virgin Islands Department of Education’s Office of Public Relations and Communications exists to heighten the public’s awareness of the Department’s mission to ensure that all students are prepared for college or the career of their choice upon graduation from high school.

In support of the mission, the Public Relations Office provides publicity for events, activities and the many successes of the Department’s schools, students, teachers, employees and leadership through internal and external communication.

The Office of Public Relations and Communication, through an integrated marketing communications approach services the marketing, branding, public, and media relations, advertising and graphic design needs of the Department, districts, and schools.

The Public Relations Office reports directly to the Commissioner of Education.

Viya Continues Partnership With The VI Department Of Education For Virtual Learning

Viya, the leading telecommunications provider in the U.S. Virgin Islands, continues to provide contractual service to all Virgin Islands Department of Education Mi-Fi (personal mobile hotspots) accounts.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, The Virgin Islands Department of Education contracted with Viya for Mi-Fi devices. These devices were required, as per contract, to provide 75Gbps of bandwidth for students to attend school remotely and complete educational activities.
Viya has had no issues with the Department of Education related to payment and no account was disconnected. Further, it is against Viya’s business practices and policies for employees to discuss billing matters with individuals who are not authorized on the account. There are isolated cases of Mi-Fis losing the settings for various reasons and, as such, Viya is committed to resolving these issues, if and when they occur, as with any other service that is provided.

Parents and students who are experiencing technical difficulties, especially if a red light is persistently displayed on the device, can have this resolved by visiting the Customer Experience Centers at Estate Diamond in St. Croix, Tutu Park in St. Thomas and The Marketplace in St. John.
“Viya has a long history of supporting educational initiatives and we are pleased to assist the VI Department of Education in their efforts to keep students connected to online learning platforms using our high speed 4G LTE network with the Mi-Fi service,” Chief Executive Officer Geraldine Pitt stated.
“The Department of Education is pleased to partner with Viya to provide internet access to families in need,” Commissioner Racquel Berry-Benjamin said. “We want to remind students and parents that these devices are to be used for students to complete schoolwork. Usage outside of this may result in monthly overages, which can affect internet connection speed. We thank Viya for its ongoing support and partnership.”

ST. THOMAS, USVI – Classes for St. Thomas-St. John District students in PreK-3rd grade have been cancelled on Fri., Oct. 22 to accommodate a planned in-service day for teachers. Students in 4th-12th grades are not affected and will attend classes as normal. PreK-3rd grade students will resume classes on Mon., Oct. 25. St. Croix USDA Commodities Distribution Postponed Until Oct. 30 

 

ST. CROIX, USVI – The planned Oct. 16 distribution of USDA commodities on St. Croix has been postponed to Sat., Oct. 30 at 7 a.m. at the St. Croix Educational Complex High School.

Items will be given away, while supplies last.

To obtain commodities, proper identification must be presented. A self-certification form must be completed on-site, where participants are required to provide information about their gross income. Anyone unable to provide satisfactory information to the distribution site staff will not receive a commodity package. Participants should bring sturdy boxes or bags to assist with the transport of the food packages. The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) uses income, not age to determine program eligibility. The distribution is for all needy persons meeting the criteria shown below. Distribution packages will be limited to one per household.

Individuals or heads of households eligible to receive the commodities must be identified as needy by meeting one of the following criteria:
    1. A person or head of household whose gross family income does not exceed the 185% of the Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines for July 1, 2021 thru         June 30, 2022 (see income eligibility guideline table below).
2. A person or Head of household that is a client of any of the following income certified assistance programs:
    1. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
    2. Medical Assistance Program
    3. Be a Tenant of a Subsidized Public Housing program

St. Croix USDA Commodities Distribution Postponed Until Oct. 30
