POSITION: INDUSTRIAL EDUCATION INSTRUCTOR DESCRIPTION

Description

This is a standard position description for use in the Public Educational System of the United States Virgin Islands. Vocational education teachers have personal experience in skill-based occupations (such as masonry and plumbing) and, in the classroom, they help students develop those same skills. Also called career and technical education teachers, they work in public junior and senior high schools. This is a ten-month position. Teaching professionals are represented by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). Certification in an academic subject area and instructional level is required. A teacher works under the general supervision of a Principal, Assistant Principal, or other administrator.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (NOT ALL INCLUSIVE)

  • Instructs through lectures, discussions, and demonstrations and hands-on training;
  • Establishes and enforces rules for behavior in the classroom;
  • Enforces all administration policies and rules governing students;
  • Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units and projects, and communicates those objectives to students;
  • Prepares materials, classroom, and laboratory for class activities;
  • Adapts teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students’ varying needs and interests;
  • Maintains accurate and complete student records as required by law, district policies, and administrative regulation;
  • Assigns and grades class work and homework;
  • Observes and evaluates students’ performance, behavior, social development and physical health;
  • Plans and conducts activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question and investigate;
  • Prepares students for later grades by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities and to persevere with challenging tasks;
  • Guides and counsels students with adjustment and/or academic problems, or special academic interests;
  • Instructs and monitors students in the use and care of equipment and materials in order to prevent injuries and damage;
  • Prepares  for  assigned  classes  and  shows  written  evidence  of  preparation  upon  request  of  immediate supervisors;
  • Uses computers, audiovisual aids, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations;
  • Meets with parents/guardians to discuss their children’s progress, and to determine priorities and resource needs for their children;
  • Confers with parents/guardians, other teachers, counselors and administrators in order to resolve students’ behavioral and academic problems;
  • Confers with other staff members to plan and schedule lessons promoting learning, following approved curricula;
  • Prepares objectives and outlines for courses of study, following curriculum guidelines or requirements of states and schools;
  • Prepares and implements remedial programs for students requiring extra help;
  • Attends professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops in order to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Collaborates with other teachers and administrators in the development, evaluation and revision of secondary school programs;
  • Prepares reports on students and activities as required by administration;
  • Selects, stores, orders, issues, and inventories classroom equipment, materials and supplies;
  • Plans and supervises class projects, field trips, visits by guest speakers, or other experiential activities;
  • Attends staff meetings, and serves on committees as required;
  • Performs administrative duties such as assisting in school libraries, hall and cafeteria monitoring, and bus loading and unloading;
  • Shares responsibility for the smooth functioning of the school and the enforcement of the rules and regulations of the school and the policies of the Department of Education;
  • Performs all other tasks and assumes such other duties as designated by the school principal.

FACTOR I: KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the education laws, policies, rules and regulations of the United States Virgin Islands;
  • Knowledge of safety rules and regulations as applied to specific content area;
  • Knowledge of specific subject area, educational materials, and any assistive technology in that area;
  • Knowledge of the student learning process;
  • Knowledge of the principles of teaching and classroom control;
  • Ability to strive to maximize the educational achievement of each student;
  • Ability to plan lessons, coordinate resources, and manage time on task;
  • Ability to maintain accurate and complete records as required by district policy and administrative regulations;
  • Ability to create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students;
  • Ability to cooperate and share professionally with members of the administration and other staff;
  • Ability to develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior in accordance with district policies and guidelines, and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner;
  • Ability to work cooperatively with students, staff, administrators, parents and others;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality about students in accordance with state and federal law as well as district policy.

FACTOR II: SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

  • Works under the direct supervision or assignment of a Principal, Assistant Principal, or other administrator;
  • Work is controlled by routine review and reporting to or consultation with supervisor;
  • Work is reviewed through classroom visits, reports and achievement of objectives.

FACTOR III: GUIDELINES

  • Federal safety and Departmental guidelines and procedures must be followed, including HIPPA law and guidelines.

FACTOR IV: COMPLEXITY

  • Requires a combination of job functions using serious judgment to perform a variety of job responsibilities;
  • Responsible for ensuring the safety of children on school grounds and the completion of assignments;
  • Requires patience, repetition and flexibility.

FACTOR V: SCOPE AND EFFECT

  • Is responsible for the planning and implementation of instructional programs so that vocational education students achieve individual maximum potential to redound to benefit of the student and the community.

FACTOR VI: PERSONAL CONTACTS AND PUROPSE OF CONTACTS

  • Contacts are primarily with Principals, Coordinators, administrators, coworkers, students, parents, and the community at large.
  • The  primary  purposes  of  the  contacts  are  to  provide  information,  assistance  and  support,  to  gather information, to evaluate instructional outcomes, and to make recommendations for improving the system.

FACTOR VII: PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to:

  • Stand for long periods of time with frequent walking, sitting, and bending;
  • Talk or hear within normal range;
  • Reach with hands and arms;
  • Read fine print;
  • Lift/push/pull up to 70 pounds;
  • handle cumbersome awkwardly shaped items

FACTOR VII: WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work environment involves normal everyday hazards or discomforts typical of classroom and training rooms;
  • Exposure to deviations from pleasant environmental conditions may be only occasional.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Basic qualifications are established by the Virgin Islands Vocational Board.

  • Bachelors degree in Industrial Education, Mechanic and Repair Technology, Engineering Technology or a related field or
  • Associate’s degree in Industrial Education, Mechanic and Repair Technology, Engineering Technology or a related field; or
  • Two years of post secondary trades school training and at least five years of progressively responsible experience; or
  • Completion of the twelfth school grade, and ten years of progressively responsible experience in two or more building trades such as plumbing, electrical wiring and carpentry, or in mechanical or refrigeration work, at least two years of which were in a supervisory capacity.
  • Proof of United States citizenship or permanent residency or work authorization.
  • Demonstrate good moral character (through submission of police records and three letters of professional recommendation or submission of a professional rating form provided by the Department.)
  • Proof of good health (through submission of a physician’s statement)
