POSITION: REFRIGERATION ENGINEER

DESCRIPTION

This is advanced professional engineering work in installing, constructing, repair and maintenance of refrigeration equipment. Work involves the application of specialized engineering knowledge in the maintenance of refrigeration equipment and cooling system and is performed with considerable independence due to the specialized nature of the work performed. General instruction and supervision is received from an administrative or maintenance supervisor through periodic inspection of the plant facilities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (NOT ALL INCLUSIVE)

  • Prepares plans for installation of equipment and determines necessary power requirements for operation;
  • Plans and recommends changes or additions to the existing circulating system to secure maximum plant efficiency;
  • Determines safety factors for operation of equipment and designs necessary cut-off or release valves;
  • Prepares plan designs and specifications for modification of equipment and circulating system and develop methods of maintaining and utilizing standby equipment;
  • Makes periodic inspection of plant and operating equipment to determine maintenance of proper temperatures, equipment to ensure proper working conditions and general operating efficiency of the plant;
  • Repair compressors, condensers and other equipment;
  • Requisitions necessary spare parts and supplies needed for the proper maintenance and operation of the refrigeration equipment;
  • Instructs operating personnel in work to be performed and precautions required in the operation of the equipment and proper methods of reading gauge and pressure records;
  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of refrigeration equipment including compressors, condensers and electrical motors;
  • Knowledge of the temperatures required for maintaining perishables and other commodities in proper condition to prevent spoilage;
  • Knowledge of the construction methods particularly as they relate to the installation of refrigeration equipment and cooling systems;
  • Ability to design refrigeration installation sand to estimate construction, installation and operating costs;
  • Ability to determine repair and maintenance needs and inspect completed work to determine if it meets operating and safety standards;
  • Ability to make repair and adjustments to refrigeration equipment;
  • Ability to read, write, understand and follow simple oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all persons contacted during the course of work.
  • Ability to lift 70 (seventy) pounds or more.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. and (3) three years experience at the journeyman level or
  • Completion of an apprenticeship and (2) two years experience at the journeyman level or
  • An Associate’s degree in a related area
