POSITION: MASON

DESCRIPTION

This is skilled work on the journey man level in the maintenance and repair of masonry structures. An employee in this class performs a variety of skilled masonry tasks on government buildings. Assignments may involve bricklaying, cement finishing, stone masonry or setting ceramic tiles. Work is performed with minimal supervision. Work is reviewed by the maintenance supervisor.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (NOT ALL INCLUSIVE)

  • Mixes and pours cements and mortars by hand or with mixer; builds simple forms for concrete; lays, bricks, stones, or concrete blocks;
  • Lays, finishes, and repairs concrete sidewalks, floors and steps; repairs and replaces worn marble and stone stairways;
  • Repairs, patches and replaces plaster walls; weatherproofs leaky wall with caulking compound, mortar, or roofing cement; caulks windows against drafts and water;
  • Builds partitions, columns, pilasters and abutments; installs ceramic or glazed tile;
  • Performs other assigned maintenance tasks including fence repair, rough carpentry and plastering as assigned
  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the materials, equipment and methods used in the masonry trade;
  • Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade;
  • Ability to make time and material estimates;
  • Ability to interpret and work from penciled sketches and drawings;
  • Skill in mixing mortar and concrete;
  • Skill in the care and use of the standard tools and equipment of the masonry trade
  • Ability to work long hours while standing;
  • Ability to read, write, understand and follow oral and written instructions;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all persons contacted during the course of work
  • Ability to lift seventy (70) pounds or more.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. and (3) three years’ experience at the journeyman level ; or
  • Completion of an apprenticeship
