Students at the Ricardo Richards Elementary School demonstrated their appreciation of Quelbe Music and Virgin Islands’ heritage when world renowned Stanley and the Ten Sleepless Knights (TSK) performed Friday as part of the school’s V.I. History, Culture and Traditions celebration.
Sixth graders Ronald Schjang, III and Tyler Valmont, masters of ceremony, took turn reading the history of Quelbe to open the Concert titled “Remember Our Culture for Therein Lies the Future.” Student Renisha Wade then read Richard Schrader’s “Raise Your Head Quelbe” poem with poised. TSK kicked off their performance with upbeat Quelbe music, the official music of the Virgin Islands. Some students later joined the stalwart musicians by performing popular TSK songs. Faculty and staff members paired with each other and students to dance the delightful Quadrille moves around the basketball court, while TSK performed on a stage under an almond tree.
Other performances included skits by various classes and the “The Seven Step” dance by the Ricardo Richards Quadrille Dancers.
