The Virgin Islands Department of Education (VIDE) acknowledges the efforts of students at the St. Croix Educational Complex for conducting a peaceful protest on Friday, September 6, 2024, to express their concerns about school and classroom conditions. The VIDE recognizes the students' right to voice their frustrations about matters that directly have an impact on their educational environment and well-being.
St. Croix Insular Superintendent, Dr. Sharlene Belton-Gonzalez, engaged directly with the students during their demonstration. She expressed her appreciation for their courage and the constructive manner in which they chose to communicate their concerns. "The students have taken a bold and courageous step in asking to be heard, and we are here to listen," Dr. Gonzalez stated. The Department acknowledges that student voices are essential in our efforts to create a positive learning environment and remains committed to working on maintenance projects and addressing all issues of concern for school stakeholders.
On September 5, 2024, a letter addressed to Commissioner Dionne Wells-Hedrington from the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) was received. The letter requested an opportunity to meet with the Commissioner to discuss the concerns raised by parents, students, and staff. In response, Commissioner Wells-Hedrington expressed her appreciation for the PTO's engagement and affirmed the Department's commitment to open communication and partnership. She also underscored the urgency of the issues raised and the importance of addressing them promptly.
Due to a scheduled Senate Hearing with the Committee on Education and Workforce Development on Monday, September 9th, which requires the attendance of all VIDE leadership, the Commissioner requested the PTO’s understanding in postponing the meeting to Tuesday, September 10, 2024. "We value the collaboration with the PTO and are dedicated to addressing the concerns of our students and their families. We remain committed to open dialogue and to finding solutions that meet the needs of our school communities," the Commissioner stated.
Furthermore, the VIDE is actively investigating the incident that occurred yesterday at the St. Croix Educational Complex. The Department remains engaged in monitoring the student's recovery and will continue to follow up with the family.
The VIDE understands the public concern regarding school facilities and is fully committed to making the necessary improvements across both districts to address challenges and ensure a safe and conducive learning environment for all students.
