The Virgin Islands Department of Education will hold its annual Week of the Young Child celebration at elementary schools across the territory from April 8-12, 2019.
Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration across the United States and is sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Its purpose is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.
The St. Thomas - St. John District recently held its first annual Week of the Intermediate Child, to highlight the growth, development, and achievements of intermediate students.
WEEK OF THE INTERMEDIATE CHILD CELEBRATES RICH HISTORY AND CULTURE OF THE CARIBBEAN
ST. THOMAS, USVI –St. Thomas – St. John District students in grades 4-6 assembled in the Bertha C. Boschulte (BCB) gymnasium on Friday, March 1, 2019, to showcase their knowledge of Caribbean history and culture in celebration of the district’s inaugural Week of the Intermediate Child, February 25 – March 1.
Organized by the District’s Elementary Programs Coordinator Kalamis Maduro, the week highlights intermediate students who are in their years of intellectual expansiveness.
“I wanted to give intermediate students an opportunity and platform to showcase their abilities and academic excellence,” said Maduro. “I chose the Caribbean theme because, one, we’re transitioning from Black History to VI History Month and the students could stand to learn more about the history and culture of Caribbean islands. We’re more alike that we are different.”
Themed, “An Intermediate Showcase of Caribbean Excellence,” students from public and parochial schools creatively displayed the history and culture of various Caribbean islands and prominent figures.
The event opened with a saxophone rendition of the National and Negro National Anthems by Charlotte Amalie High School student JahQuan Richards; BCB 6th grader Darnell Birmingham sang the Virgin Islands March.
In honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, March 2, students participated in 10 minutes of silent reading for the annual Read Across America, Drop Everything and Read tribute the great American children’s author.
The main acts of the event were the Walking Museum and Island Displays, which were judged segments of the program.
Nicole Smith-Thompson of the STTJ District narrated her journey through a live action museum where when touched, students, dressed in character, recited monologues representing historical figures, to include Trevor Nicholas “Daddy” Friday, Sr., Robert “Bob” Marley, Queen Mary, Cyril E. King, Irvin “Brownie” Brown, and Elaine Sprauve.
Students create visually appealing displays for their islands using props, food, and crafts that fully depicted their island of choice.
Following a lunch, the audience and participants assembled for the award ceremony. The events ended with an engaging performance by local artist Je’Ronn “Sisa” Simmonds.
