One hundred two cadets and 15 parents from the Ivanna Eudora Kean High School JROTC Rays Battalion toured the United States Coast Guard Cutter EAGLE Tall Ship on Saturday, May 26, 2018 docked at the West Indian Company(WICO) Limited dock in Havensight.
Cadets engaged with men and women of the Coast Guard and Coast Guard cadets and learned of the ship's 82 year history.
Following the tour of the vessel, the Rays Battalion conducted their Community Service Learning Project at the Western Cemetery where 95 Cadets held a memorial service led by the Battalion Commander, Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Brannigan. Selected Cadets in the group recognized a few Virgin Islands that served in World War I and II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. They also colelctively sung the National Anthem and Virgin Islands March. The cadets and small audience then observed a moment of silence to recognize the fallen service members and prisoners of war. Commander Benjamin of American Legion also gave a remarks. Once the ceremony concluded, all of the Rays Cadets and a few of Coast Guard Cadets that joined us to participate in the service project obtained small US flags from Commander Benjamin and her team and began placing flags on all the Veterans graves in cemetery # 1 and # 2. Flags were placed on the graves in cemetery# 3 by the American Legion members.
The Might Rays Battalion also participated in the annual Memorial Day parade on Monday, May 29.
