St. Croix District Special Education Division Is On the Move

St. Croix District Special Education staffers attended the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Convention and Expo in St. Louis, MO, April 13-16, 2016. Their t-shirts read: "My title is Special Educator because Awesome Differentiating Behavior-Changing Ninja is too long for my resume."

The Division of Special Education, St. Croix District, is on the move. The team began the school year with a power-packed Parent Retreat and a Back to School Conference at Divi Carina Bay Hotel & Resort that received rave reviews from attendees. As the school year progressed, the Division has collaborated with many of its community partners to host monthly sessions for staff and provided opportunities for some of its stakeholders to attend national conferences where they were exposed to leaders in the field and had opportunities to explore cutting-edge resources to engage students with disabilities and the staff who support them.

One such opportunity happened April 13-16 when eleven members of the Special Education Division attended the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Convention and Expo in St. Louis, Missouri. CEC is the largest international professional organization dedicated to improving the educational success of individuals with disabilities and/or gifts and talents. CEC advocates for appropriate governmental policies, sets professional standards, provides professional development, advocates for individuals with exceptionalities, and helps professionals obtain conditions and resources necessary for effective professional practice.

Additionally, during the week of April 24ten team members attended the 37th LRP National Institute in New Orleans, Louisiana. LRP’s National Institute brings togehter the nation’s leading special education experts to share information and strategies to turn legal mandates into best practices, so staff can ensure that students receive appropriate services.

Team members who attended the two national conferences will play a significant role in the development of the Division's 2016-2017 professional development plan and will be afforded opportunities to share their learnings with other stakeholders as they strive to improve outcomes for students with disabilities in the St. Croix District.
