A group of 17 8th graders enrolled in the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program at St. Croix's Arthur A. Richards and Elena L. Christian junior high schools travelled to St. Thomas on April 15, 2016 for their annual College Campus Tour at the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI). The trip allows the students to explore their alternate hometown HBCU.
On the tour, students visited all of the major departments and schools at the UVI St. Thomas campus. UVI's Dr. Zuri Allen coordinated the day tour, which also included the Research Day activities that was held at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center.
The AVID program trains students for academic success and college readiness. It is an intensive support system tha offers tutorials and fosters strong student/teacher relationships. The program exposes students to college tutors that assist them in their course work. Students enrolled in the program also learn to develop important skills by participating in Philosophical Chairs, which is a technique that allows students to think critically, as well as verbally ponder and express their thoughts on any topic. Students also participate in Socratic seminars, which is a class discourse that allows them to achieve a deeper understanding about the ideas and values in a text.
The students begin fund raising from the beginning of the school year to cover the cost of the trip. The group thanks administrators Mr. Kent Moorehead (AARJHS) and Mr. Carlos McGregor (ELCJH) for helping to make the trip possible again this year. AVID teachers accompanying students on the 2016 trip were Mrs. Jamelia Thurland from the Arthur A. Richards Junior High School and Ms. Antoinette Bailey from the Elena L. Christian Junior High School.
