Students and visitors enjoy "A Taste of Pearl B" under tents at the school on March 30, 2017.
During Virgin Islands History Month celebrated in March, schools on St. Croix set out to savor the island's local cuisine.
For example, students, faculty and staff at John H. Woodson Junior High had “A Taste of Woodson” on Thursday, March 16, where parents and other visitors gathered in the school’s courtyard to test the culinary skills of students who prepared salt fish, beef and vegetable pates, pastries, shish kabobs, among other foods. Local drinks, such as sorrel, ginger, passion fruit and lemonade--all crowd favorites--were also on display. Even culture bearers in the culinary arts like La-Verne Y. Bates filled a table with tarts, candies and cakes for the school’s feast. "A Taste of Woodson" was complemented by Maypole, Quadrille and Steel band performances by the school's music students.
Pearl B. Larsen Elementary also featured its annual “Taste of Pearl B. Larsen” as the school's month-long celebration of VI History Month came to a close on March 30. The event was a grand dining experience in local cuisine for students, their parents, and the faculty and staff. Pastries, and foods such as seasoned rice, stuffing, macaroni pie, kallaloo and bull foot soup along with local drinks were in abundance in the school's cafeteria for all to enjoy.
