The Virgin Islands Department of Education (VIDE) recognizes the critical role paraprofessionals play in students’ academic achievement and life success. Paraprofessionals are respected and supported as integral team members responsible for assisting in the delivery of instruction and other student-related activities. The paraprofessional evaluation process supports the continuous growth of paraprofessionals as active members of school communities to improve student learning.

Paraprofessional Standards describe the role, responsibilities, and competencies of paraprofessionals to guide them in their professional practice and growth.
A framework (also called a rubric) provides descriptions of practice at different levels of performance in observable and measurable terms and articulates performance progression. A framework focuses the evaluation on the practices that are most important. The VI Paraprofessional Task Force Subcommittee adapted the VI Paraprofessional Framework from Bergenfield's Public Schools Paraprofessional Observation Form which is based on the Framework for Teaching by Charlotte Danielson. The Framework aligns with the VI Paraprofessional Standards.
Three measures have been selected for paraprofessional evaluation. All have been aligned to the VI Paraprofessional Standards and Framework to provide a fair and accurate evaluation of paraprofessional practice.
Each paraprofessional is observed formally once during a school year, The principal and paraprofessional identify four components from the Paraprofessional Framework to be observed. Evidence is gathered during the observation and the principal uses the Framework to score the paraprofessional performance related to the four selected components. Each paraprofessional is required to complete a professional growth plan (PGP) as part of his or her evaluation process. The growth focuses on a growth goal the paraprofessional selects in discussion with their administrator. Being present is an important professional behavior for all employees of the VIDE. Paraprofessionals play a significant role in the instruction and support of students as well as school activities. Therefore, it is important that paraprofessionals are on time and present. Paraprofessional time contributes 10% to the total summative evaluation score for all paraprofessionals. Paraprofessional Time is determined by attendance and tardiness in TimeForce and is scored using the rubric in the VIDE Attendance Policy.
