The Virgin Islands Department of Education (VIDE) informs the public that a grease fire occurred today in the cooking lab classroom at Ivanna Eudora Kean High School. The fire, which started in a frying pan, quickly spread upward to the roof.
Thanks to the swift and coordinated response of the teacher, students, and monitors, everyone was evacuated from the room and the fire was immediately addressed using extinguishers before it could spread further. Virgin Islands Fire and Emergency Medical Services (VIFEMS) promptly dispatched a fire truck to the scene to ensure the area was secure.
There were no injuries to students or personnel, and the affected classroom will undergo a full assessment to determine the extent of damage and its operability moving forward.
The VIDE commends the school’s administration, students, faculty, and staff for their calm and responsible actions in responding to the incident. We also extend our gratitude to VIFEMS for their rapid response and continued partnership in ensuring the safety of our school communities.
Further updates will be provided as assessments are completed.
