Juanita Guardine Summer Campers win Summer Read-off Competition

Thirty-nine students attending the Juanita Gardine Summer Camp were rewarded with a pizza and cake for winning the St. Croix District 2017 Summer Camp Read-off Competition held during the week of July 12-21, 2017.

The over-joyed campers enjoyed the light lunch during their time on a field trip to the Whim Museum in Frederiksted and were enlightened on the importance of literacy.  Students proudly boasted their participation in the Challenge and were encouraged to continue reading as the Challenge is currently underway until September 22, 2017. The reading champs also received an activity booklet and VI Star Reader Certificates of Achievement for their accomplishment. Juanita Gardine star readers averaged 15 books per person read during the week.

The friendly literacy competition, which supported the 9th Annual Governor’s Summer Reading Challenge, averaged the most number of books read over a five-day period in each summer program. Students recorded the books they read throughout the week on individual tracking sheets provided to them.

As an added bonus, the books read during the Read-off Competition will also be counted towards the students’ participation in the 2017 Governor’s Summer Reading Challenge, currently running from June 12 – September 22, 2017.

Students who join in on the Governor’s Summer Reading Challenge are eligible to participate in the Big Celebration to conclude the Challenge in the fall.
