VIHA's Pearson Gardens Summer Camp Wins Read-off Competition

The Virgin Islands Housing Authority’s (VIHA) Paul M. Pearson Gardens Summer Camp won the St. Thomas – St. John District 2017 Summer Camp Read-off Competition held July 17 –21, 2017.

Twenty-six students enrolled in Pearson Gardens Summer Camp enjoyed a fun pizza party on Friday, July 28, 2017 and each received VI Star Readers Certificates of Achievement for their participation and success in the competition.

The friendly literacy competition, which supported the 9th Annual Governor’s Summer Reading Challenge, averaged the most number of books read over a five-day period in each summer program. Students recorded the books they read throughout the week on individual tracking sheets provided to them.

As an added bonus, the books read during the Read-off Competition will also be counted towards the students’ participation in the 2017 Governor’s Summer Reading Challenge, currently running from June 12 – September 22, 2017.

Students who join in on the Governor’s Summer Reading Challenge are eligible to participate in the Big Celebration to conclude the Challenge in the fall.

A total of ten summer programs participated in the 2017 Read-off Competition, to include, the Gladys Abraham Summer Enrichment Program, VIHA’s Michael J. Kirwan Terrace Summer Camp, Ulla F. Muller Summer Enrichment Program, Jane E. Tuitt Summer Enrichment Program, Lockhart Elementary Summer Enrichment Program, Yvonne E. Milliner-Bowsky Marlins Entrepreneurs Summer Enrichment Program, VIHA’s Bovoni Summer Camp, VIHA’s Estate Tutu Highrise Summer Camp, and the E. Benjamin Oliver Summer Enrichment Program.
