New Schools Public Meetings Recap

For seven evenings in October, the Department of Education's New Schools Construction Advisory Board, comprised of elected officials, teachers, school administrators, students, business owners, and community activists, held a series of meetings to invite public input on the rebuilding and modernization of the territory’s public schools.

It's long overdue, the general public agrees, and thanks to unprecedented funding through Congress, the territory will realize the construction of new schools that will suite the needs of the next generation.

Those who attended the meetings, held Oct. 16 on St. John; Oct. 17, 22, and 24 on St. Thomas; and Oct. 28, 29, and 30 on St. Croix, were engaged in discussions on six main areas: industry standards, guiding principles, building a school for the future, future proposed school locations, school building samples, and a learning lab activity.

At the close of each meeting, attendees were given the opportunity to fill out an online survey to further share their thoughts. In early 2020, the Advisory Board is expected to update the community on the latest developments of the .
