Brain Break

What is a Brain Break?

A brain break is a short period of time when we change up the routine of incoming information. When we take a brain break, it refreshes our thinking and helps us discover another solution to a problem or see a situation through a different lens. During these few minutes, the brain moves away from learning, memorizing, and problem solving. The brain break actually helps to incubate and process new information. Think of the term "sleep on it" - once our brain has had time to process information and rest, we generally wake with greater clarity.

Furthermore, utilizing exercise during  brain breaks is very beneficial! There are several hypothesized mechanisms for why exercise is beneficial for cognition, including:

(1)  Increased blood and oxygen flow to the brain

(2)  Increased levels of norepinephrine and endorphins resulting in a reduction of stress and an improvement of mood

(3)  Increased growth factors that help to create new nerve cells and support synaptic plasticity

EBO Student Roll Out

The students and staff at Emmanuel Benjamin Oliver Elementary School have taken flight with PBIS. The Wise Owls are learning as a team what it takes to implement PBIS, or as they would say “HOOT Behavior” in and around the school campus.   Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive approach to establishing behavioral supports and improving school climate needed for all students to achieve social, emotional and academic success. On Wednesday, March 6, 2017, E.B.O. “rolled out” PBIS to their students.

Evidence shows implementation of PBIS improves student behavior. It helps to minimize or reduce disruptive and aggressive behavior, bullying, peer rejection, and suspensions. PBIS increases student concentration, kindness towards others, and emotional self-control. The effects of positive behavioral interventions are even more evident when children are exposed to PBIS at a young age.

HOOT represents the core values that EBO feels are the most important in improving the school’s cultural environment. During the Roll Out students sang the PBIS school song and performed skits to show their peers what it looks like to show HOOT behavior.

H- Helpful

O- Organized

O- On-task

PBIS was first introduced to the teachers at EBO, shortly after it was introduced to the students.  All the staff will continue working on teaching the students HOOT Behavior and how to use it.

Students demonstrate HOOT values to the different clusters:

EBO School Store Roll Out

On May 19, 2017 E. Benjamin Oliver Elementary School “Rolled Out” their NEW PBIS School Store!! It was a success! The store includes treats, toys and school supplies. Students who earn "Owl Bucks" throughout the week are able to spend them at the School Store. This type of token based reward system encourages good behaviors, and rewards students for doing the right thing. As part of PBIS, EBO is designing comprehensive behavioral management policies and procedure including a school-wide reward system. Way to go EBO! HOOT HOOT!
